Game Decisions

For this weeks reading I was quite confused and had to read the article twice and even then I barely understood what it actually meant. The first article that I will talk about is called "Social Design Practices For Human-Scale Online Games" written by Daniel Cook. This article was very interesting as it looked at the psychological aspect of making/ designing a game which is something I have never thought about before.  The first thing that I liked about this article was how they talked about how you make friends. I kind of disagree with this a bit as there is so many ways to make friends nowadays and people are so different that you cant generalize them into a few main headings like this article has done. This quote really annoyed me "   At higher levels of friendship, there needs to be an opportunity for safe, consensual, intimate sharing of weaknesses". I agree that to be good friends you have to share stuff but opening up to people does not show a weakness at a

Game design document

I had huge problems using this site you linked to make the game document. I lost all my work about 5 times and things seemed to save in the wrong place. Some of the headings also made no sense. Sorry If I left anything out. This site was a mess to use my dundoc

Unity Tutorial 05

For this weeks unity tutorial things got very interesting. we finally learnt how to add weapons to a map and how how objects  can be picked up. sound effects were also thought in this tutorial although I did have a bit of bother trying to get my sound effects to load properly. unity logo This weeks unity tutorials were really interested and added another dynamic to my blossoming game development skills. The first tutorial that I attempted this week consisted of picking up an object which for this game tutorial was a gem. this can relate back to my final game as I want my character to hopefully pick up items. this tutorial was one of the easier tutorials to follow but it still thought some of the basics that I really did need to know. I actually found the coding in this relatively easy which was a surprise for me as I usually struggle putting code into unity. The way the character can pick up objects can differ a lot depending on what type of game you make but this is a good s

Games GDD

game design animation For this weeks reading we got to read about game design and how it different aspects can make a game feel and play better. this was very interesting to me. I spent about 40 minutes reading the articles and getting an understanding of what it was all about.  The Article that I read was called "Design Considerations" written by Greg Aleknevicus.  This was a bit more advanced than needed as it went into how a games box will look and we will not need to worry about that for years to come but it still had some key opponents the will hopefully make a better game designer. I really liked his sentences about making tiles smaller so they don't affect everything around the, This sounds so simple but it is something that I would never have thought about at all until I read this article. I will most certainly use this in my final game as I will be creating a wall or tiles somewhere on my map.  This article really opened up my eyes to disabilities however

Game vision statement

example of how my game may look over the past few weeks I have been thoroughly researching what game I would like to make. All the unity tutorials that I have been doing have made me a bit more confident on my game making skills but to be honest my unity skills are still not the best and I do not enjoy game development much at all, but For my game I will try to keep it simple but still manageable. To give a bit of background to my game, I hope to kind of follow  this unity tutorial . I will change loads of things but this does seem like a very manageable project I could take on.  I will also use this video  on how to add enemies to a game as that is something I struggled with when practicing lat week. This tutorial is great as you can randomly make enemies spawn and it will not be so predictable as to where the enemies will go. For my game I want to make a  platformer. I think this could be very fun. I have some bigger ideas but being realistic I do not think that them idea

Games MDA

https://www.developereconomics.com/break-game-design-part-1-get-started To start off this I watched the video that you linked on the website. The first thing I got from this video was the mechanics and dynamics of a game. these are vital to how you game will look and play. mechanics are the rules or constraints for the game e.g kill 50 zombies on dead island 2 and you complete level 3 .  dynamics go a bit more in depth but they go into what strategies go into figuring out the rules of the game  e.g you have to jump 5 times to kill a mushroom boss in mario 2.  Each game is made up of several different abstractions. the next thing that really made me think was that we need to get past using words such as fun. I fully agree with this as so many different people mind different things fun and others find them boring so instead of using the word fun try use the words "well made".  this article was quite confusing to understand at time but I still do think it gave me a great

Feedback stratagies

I really enjoyed researching more into feedback and researching into this has opened my eyes up further to how feedback can vary. The first article I read was called what kind of messages help kids grow. the first thing that really struck was the comment about fixed traits and how intelligence is wived as a fixed trait. I can really agree with this as all my school life I just accepted the fact that I was average and not very smart but if I only could have changed my mindset and worked harder I may have became the intelligent one. I do not like good praise like good  they are just empty comments if you really want to praise someone then you should give them feedback on exactly what it is they did good not just say good. My little 6 year old brother always says I cant do stuff but I never let him give up as if he gives up on small things like school homework , what will he do when he is faced with an actual challenge in his life. Overall this article has reminded me that praise can be

Unity tutorial 2

For this tutorial I first watched both of the jimmy Vegas videos and then loaded up unity and whenever I got stuck I used the tutorial for a bit of guidance. I like to do it on my own as you learn more than just straight up copying. I enjoyed this tutorial as it was more in depth than the first one and I got to learn more unity skills but overall the tutorial was very outdated and when I tried to do basic stuff like add characters in to places it wouldn't let me. these tutorials are very hard to follow when you do not get any help with them in class but I gave it my best shot. the first thing you had to do was create a wall to add to your game I found this challenging but very doable. I really liked this tutorial as it was the first real time I have had to use code or script as jimmy vegas calls it. this code is very different than web dev and can be confusing but I got the hang of it pretty quickly. the main problem I had was making sure I had everything under the right type

Game elements

To start off this blog I went ahead and read the article about critical analysis that you had left for us top read. this article was very interesting and I learned a lot that I did not know before about reviews. I now understand that critical analysis is not just a review but it is an unbiased look at the game or movie in full. Anyone can make a review and if they have any ties to the maker of the game/ movie they will rate it high even if it is really awful that is why critical analysis is great as you get a proper all around review. the main aspect of critical analysis is to understand why the game developer chose the elements he did and how they all tie together to make the game complete.Designing a game requires the creation of all of the game’s parts. If you haven’t defined the formal elements of your game in a few ways, then you don’t really have a game at all. The next article I read was the external link you left  (link to article)   this article was over 7 pages so I coul

Feedback thoughts

So before I looked at these articles I first thought about feedback. On the one hand I find feedback very important as it really helps to see what mistakes you have in your work and learn form them but in other circumstances I think feedback can be too harsh and can put a person off something before they have every started. The first article that I read was called"a fixed mindset". This really opened up my eyes to how a fixed mindset can have dreadful consequences for people. It also got me thinking about myself and how I may have a fixed mindset too. I like to think that I am amazing at all stuff to do with video and that and when I get criticism I just brush it off and say their jealous of me but after reading this I am now open to more criticism. I also firmly believe with the point made in the article that always praising a child can make them fragile . This sis so true as so many people will grow up and not be used to any sort of criticism no matter how small it is and

Game Brainstorm

Before I even started this blog, I researched for about 35 minutes and found many games that I wanted to base my idea off. These 4 ideas are very different and I will probably go with the one that is easiest to make with unity. So for my first idea I looked up puzzle games. Puzzle games are something that really interest me as you feel so great when you finally crack the puzzle and figure it all out. for this research I used this website that really helped me understand what makes a good puzzle game. from reading this article I found that puzzle games have to be challenging but you have to be subtly pushing the player of the game towards the correct solution. you need to play test every puzzle first to see if it works and do not make it too difficult as the player will get fed up too quickly.making a puzzle game is a puzzle itself as you first have to come up with a puzzle . so I will probably not go with this idea but I am very interested to make a puzzle game in thew future

Unity tutorial 01

The first thing that I did before I started the tutorial was to watch all the jimmy vegas videos linked on the website., these really gave me a great starting place before I actually attempted the tutorial for myself. The tutorial that I did was the first one I saw called the creator dev . It was an alien shooter game. The really good thing was that you actually got to play the game before you went to make it so you could get a glimpse of how the mechanics were meant to work. The part I enjoyed the most was making my own enemies to shoot. I was disappointed that there was only really two character prototypes to go off but I did the most with them that I could. I found it very difficult to connect different pieces of the course together and make them actually work but eventually I got it right and it was pretty satisfying. This unity tutorial was very good but in general it was very limited and I am excited to get into more in depth unity tutorials in the very near future. overa

Game Design

This article has made me more interested in game design. I would have never thought that game designers were artists and would have never known what goes into game design in a whole. I like the part on iteration and that you need your game tested before it is made and why I do agree with this I wish that this was actually done nowadays as so many games are released with crazy bugs and need so many updates to fix all the issues with it.  I am very interested in story modes in games and I like to always play games just so I can see how the creator has developed characters and their emotions. this will help me in my future work not just game development. this article really made me change my thoughts on what games actually are I know that a game is A game is a “voluntary effort to overcome unnecessary obstacle. This is very deep and if you think about life is also a series of mini games that play out over the years that you are alive for. Games are a “form of art in which the parti
